Streszczenie
„Flavonoids were repeatedly shown to do decrease the incidence and consequences of cardiovascular diseases. Traditionally, solely direct antioxidant effects of these compounds were considered as the mechanism of action. Based on current literature, we know that their effects are much broader and include interaction with transition metals, direct blockade of reactive oxygen species producing enzymes as well as vasodilatory, antiplatelet and anti-inflammatory effects. In this lecture, the emphasis will be given on interaction of flavonoids and their metabolites with transition metals as well as to novel important discoveries in the antiplatelet and vasodilatory effects of 4-methylcatechol, one of the important metabolites of many phenolic compounds.”
