ABSTRACT:
Glottodidactics and translation didactics:pathways to synergy
Since time immemorial translation and language learning and teaching have been intertwined. Translating has either been regarded as auxiliary to language learning, a sad necessity when learners fail to learn foreign languages, or a great chance to overcome the dispersion after the Babel. The 1950s seem to bring a huge wave of fascination with translation – putting on par with the fascination with language. Yet, the successive decades send translating and translation to the background of the research scene – particularly owing to Chomsky’s divide into competence and performance placed. Following Chomsky’s ideas – though not uncritically - some prominent representatives of the communicative approach almost banned translation from foreign language learning. Yet, the late 20 th and the early 21 st century witness an evident growth of translation studies and translation didactics, with an unprecedented growth of translation teaching programmes all over the world. Even though the history of the interrelation between foreign language learning, translating and translation didactics is a complex one, these domains will continue as interrelated. If so, it is worthwhile to ponder upon how glottodidactics and translation didactics can support one another. It is relatively easy to show how glottodidactics influences and benefits translation didactics. Less obvious are advantages that translation training theory and practice can bestow on foreign language learning and teaching. The latter benefits will make the central point of the lecture.
